Telepsychology

For Psychologists in Canada: In the context of telepsychology, CPNB interprets “practice” as occurring in the jurisdiction where the psychologist is registered. Accordingly, psychologists registered and licenced to practice by a regulatory authority elsewhere in Canada may deliver telepsychology services to clients in New Brunswick without having to obtain registration with CPNB.  It is important to note that:

  1. You must be very clear when you present yourself that you are a psychologist from another province or territory, offering virtual telepsychology services only, and are practicing from another province or territory;
  2. You must be very clear that you are not registered as a psychologist in New Brunswick;
  3. You must inform your clients that if they wish to formulate a complaint, they must do so with the College or Board of your province or territory;
  4. You must follow all requirements from the College or Board of your province or territory;
  5. It is recommended that you verify with your insurance provider, and with the College or Board of your province or territory, whether they have specific requirements or objections regarding the provision of telepsychology outside of your province or territory.

For clarity, when providing in-person psychology services in New Brunswick, psychologists registered and licenced in other jurisdictions must first obtain registration with CPNB.  For the temporary provision of in-person services, CPNB has a 21-Day Courtesy License available.

If you require further information or have any questions, please reach out to Renée Turner, Assistant Registrar, at renee.turner@cpnb.ca.

For Psychologists Registered outside of Canada: Psychologists registered outside of a Canadian province or territory are expected to refer to CPNB’s 21-Day Courtesy Registration Process. Click here for the link for the 21-Day Courtesy License.

For CPNB Registrants practicing telepsychology outside of New Brunswick: If a CPNB registrant intends to provide telepsychology services to a client outside of New Brunswick, the registrant should first contact the regulatory authority of the jurisdiction where the client is located to determine what applicable requirements may be in place. The College expects that registrants will become familiar with and respect the requirements of other jurisdictions when providing telepsychology or in-person services in other jurisdictions.  Please note that it is not necessary to advise Quebec (OPQ) or Nova Scotia (NSBEP) of your intent to provide telepsychology services in their province as they too consider the service to be rendered in the jurisdiction where the psychologist is located, and not the client.

Please note that requirements may change from time to time, and it is recommended that you first contact the regulatory authority of the jurisdiction to determine what applicable requirements may be in place.
